Why Energy storage?

With the most recent regulations on energy bill incentives, there has been a gradual change of the tariff systems relating to the production from photovoltaic sources. With net metering procedure, any electrical network produced and transferred kWh is being bought from the PV producer at a much lower rate than the cost of consumed kWh, usually about twice. It is evident that, during daytime, amount of energy produced in excess, compared to the one consumed at that specific time, grants a very low economical return, and it is therefore preferable to accumulate energy produced in excess and use it when local loads are requesting it. Both more efficient technologies and decreasing costs for batteries: these elements have made it so convenient to store energy as to use it when needed.

Grid connected, UPS-like or stand-alone?

An UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is already a storage system, but when used within a PV system it must also comply with CEI 0-21 for Italy or with national electrical network standards and regulations. In addition, a UPS normally charges from the mains voltage: energy coming from the field is firstly being converted from DC to AC and then converted again, as to charge the battery, from AC to DC, with a double loss in terms of performance. Other DC side devices are connecting the user PV installation to the storage system only when the batteries are charged, by disconnecting it from the network. This solution is not in accordance with storage parameters stated by CEI 0-21 and does not enable the photovoltaic system to convey produced energy to the grid with net metering, since the production is totally transferred to storage batteries. This solution leads either to over-dimensioning for the batteries (typically in wintertime situation when there is a production) or in waste of energy in the summer when production is double than the one generated in wintertime and cannot be conveyed to the electrical network, because the photovoltaic generator is connected only to batteries.

For the reasons set out above, Reverberi has been choosing the only efficient solution, in compliance with CEI 0-21 and economically sustainable: both DC side storage and grid connected inverter. As inverter designer, Reverberi Enetec is providing an additional chance to its customers: modular storage, that is: retrofitted after PV inverter installation. The user may install his system with EDI inverter and, later on, install the storage system, consisting of an electronic device (Edi Energy) and battery. This way the investment in storage can wait for times that are more favorable matching user necessities, based on availability of funds or simply as a function of the expectations on future costs of the batteries.

The batteries: Li or Pb

EDI Energy is even more flexible. In the most powerful version EDI Energy makes available 2 kWh or 4 kWh of energy from lithium batteries, LiFePO4 exactly. These are the batteries on which today the industry invests more, because of high performance. With a significant initial cost, these batteries have a life expectancy of about 10 years and a maximum depth of discharge
close to zero.
Lead batteries today are interesting if user wants to reduce initial investment. They have a low starting cost, but need to be replaced every 3 or 4 years and cannot be discharged more than 30% - 50%, as the maximum depth of discharge directly influences expected life.
EDI Energy can fit in one o two separate containers, to be kept against the floor, lead batteries with 2 kWh or 4 kWh capacity. As an option EDI can fit, in the same container where EDI electronics is located, Lithium Energy batteries 2 or 4 kWh. Install Edi Energy with lead batteries and in three years, at battery replacement stage, you will have the chance to decide whether to switch to lithium or stay in Lead furthe.

Edi Energy: freedom to choose, even tomorrow

Edi Energy is a storage system that gives you the widest possible choice: no need to change hardware if tomorrow you will want to switch from one configuration of lead batteries to lithium batteries. Final user may also decide to buy only the inverter and thinking on accumulation tomorrow.

Monitoring sistem

EDI Energy has a display and a keypad, a WiFi connection and must be connected to an external Power Meter, to be installed close to energy counter. As option, Edi Energy can be connected to a complete monitoring system (4-noks®, Elios4you storage), with web connection and a specific APP.

Load management

Elios4you storage makes available a sophisticated load management system, APP based.

Emergency load supply

EDI Energy can be connected to EDI Emergency system, allowing a 230 Vac supply to emergency loads (heating, fridge, etc) from the battery on a separate cable.

Extension of accumulation capacity

The EDI Storage Unit, in the same size as Edi Energy, gives the possibility to add an additional 2 Kwh or 3 kWh to the storage capacity of Edi Energy (2 kWh).


As option, from now it is possible to insert the Wi-Fi inside the EDI ENERGY system, to manage the inverters via the APP EDI CONNECT.
